(Excerpt from an article on the new building code)
Ontario code tops in energy efficiency

Developers who satisfy certain voluntary measures can obtain a 20 per cent rebate on recently increased development charges. Marshall Homes’ Craig Marshall says it’s hard for consumers to change behaviour, but “effortless energy efficiency” works.

He likes the fact he can pick and choose how to get to EnerGuide 80.

“A lot of this new technology will come out and you’ll put it in the field and you’ll get a feel for whether people like it or not,” says Marshall, who says he sells Energy Star homes to be able to compete in his market.

Sometimes, changes can have unintended consequences...

Remember when bed and breakfast was only that? A spare room with a bath down the hall and some bacon and eggs to send you on your way? I’m here on a warm Bobcaygeon night on the screened in porch off my huge comfy room watching the sky over the canal turn twilight blue, then fade to the deep dark of a northern Ontario night. There’s no moon, just a soft warm breeze. I could fall asleep in the arms of this overstuffed chair, breathing air most city folk never know. The falling night is a much better show than what the big flatscreen tv could have offered. On the other hand, there is that deep fluffy bed; I wish Annie was here with me but maybe next Fall after we’ve closed our little cabin on Rebel’s Isle we’ll treat ourselves to an overnight at Stonehenge Waterfront Bed and Breakfast.

Stonehenge redefines the B&B experience and kicks it gently up to another level on par with four-star hotels. Recalling the uber-luxury hotels I’ve stayed in, I’d much rather be here where Lee and John Tollett make me feel more like a long lost relative than just a guest. When I arrived I sat at the marble coffee bar of Lee’s fabulous kitchen and we chatted; her sister was there and we had a pleasant visit, as if I’d just dropped by. I’m not that easy at first with people I don’t know but Lee and John have the knack of making you feel welcome and wholly at ease.

Retired from a successful mechanical contracting business, they clearly aren’t doing this for the money, but because they like people and they like being busy.

Before breakfast the next morning I wandered about the grounds. The house is a limestone Arts and Crafts style set along the canal in the midst of five acres of cedar woods. The gardens are rock gardens of course; there’s no other kind in Bobcaygeon, a rocky island at the edge of the Canadian Shield.

Lee and John Tollett in their fabulous kitchen.

Sitting on a fancy bench by the bank of the canal quietly listening to the waking birds a family of mallard ducklings and their nervous mother paddled by. A mink skittered over the rocks, and a bass boat slipped by in the fast current, two young lads high-fiveing over something. The smoky aroma of grilling steak reminded me of breakfast.

Breakfast carried me all the way through lunch. Lee loves to cook and she is good! This morning was grilled steak sliced thin with a perfect crust around it – actually, to be fair, John manned the grill. Several tender slices arranged over sautéed new potatoes, still in their jackets, and a richly spiced mushroom omelette, made with buttery yellow country eggs. Thin slices of buttered rye toast, chocolate-dipped strawberries (local, seasonal) and a fruit smoothie. And a bottomless cup of coffee.

I hated to leave but there was work to be done. I’ll leave you with this thought: Bed and Breakfast doesn’t get better than this.

Judging from the people who’ll live there, Riverbend could be our coolest neighbourhood yet. Just watch this video of a party we held recently and you’ll see what we mean.

The main reason for the party was for everyone to meet their new neighbours, and that happened for sure. We also wanted to tell everyone about our “Make a Friend a Neighbour” deal:

  1. $2000 in upgrades for you and every friend you refer who buys in Riverbend.
  2. Whoever brings the most referrals who firm up by Canada Day gets double the reward. For instance, if you win with five referrals you’ll get $20,000 worth of upgrades. A tie is split between the winners. Not bad!
So go for it! We build the houses…you build the neighbourhood.

Greater Toronto, April 29, 2011 – It was a momentous evening for the building and development industry tonight as 34 of the GTA’s premier homebuilders ascended to the stage at the BILD Awards in front of their colleagues, which included nearly a thousand builders, designers, sales and marketing professionals.

With over a thousand submissions and only 46 categories, the annual BILD Awards – presented by the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) – recognize the very best of the GTA’s new home construction industry. Now in its 31st year, the Awards also mark the 90th anniversary of the Association’s inauguration.

And the winner is…Marshall Homes,
best newspaper ad, lo-rise.

The winner!

Port 32 at Cottage Life showWell spring was certainly in the air at the cottage life show last weekend. Thousands of people turned out to welcome in the sights and sounds of what we’ve all been longing for.

Port 32 resident Betty Wood is spending a great deal of time at the office these days, but she doesn’t mind it a bit. After all, she’s in a brand new building, with breathtaking surroundings just steps from the lake and everywhere she goes, she’s met with a smile and a wave.

That’s simply the way life is here in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, where Betty and her husband Rob now live and work from a home-based office after spending the better part of their careers commuting across the Greater Toronto Area.

Long before they were giving out awards to builders I’d always been fascinated by energy efficiency and what you have to do to achieve it, and still build a house your customers are willing to pay for.
I’ve had some hits and misses, but lately more hits, judging by how my peers in the industry have been poking around my sites to see what I’m doing and how. Now there’s a compliment!

A while back, we built what turned out to be one of the first, if not the first homes (Kingsfield, Oshawa community) in the province, using wood sourced only from Ontario forests. And we announced this fact to the world and got some pretty good media coverage.

There were a lot of good reasons....
